City of Newcastle's "On our bikes 2021-2030" Cycling Plan. It is 2026 - are we halfway?

City of Newcastle’s "On our bikes" Cycling Plan was adopted in 2021 to make cycling a safe, connected and everyday transport option. We are now five years into a ten-year plan - the point at which residents should be seeing a functioning cycling network, not just individual projects.

Delivering the plan is not about fringe benefits for cyclists. It is about safer streets, reduced congestion, better health, and more liveable neighbourhoods for everyone.

Where is the Plan?

What was Promised?

By 2030, City of Newcastle committed to:

  • A safe, low-stress cycling network for people of all ages and abilities

  • Connected routes linking homes, centres, schools and transport hubs

  • Cycling becoming a normal choice for short trips

  • Increased participation and mode share, with strong safety outcomes

The plan recognises that perceived safety is the biggest barrier to cycling - and that infrastructure must be designed to remove fear, not just meet minimum standards.

Five years in, are we halfway there?

Newcastle Cycleways Movement would like to gather the community's perceptions about how well the City is progressing against the Plan's objectives.

To that end, we have made an online survey that we ask residents of Newcastle to complete. The survey is available here and its questions are drawn directly from the Plan’s listed actions under each of its objectives. The survey should take around fifteen minutes to complete.

Why do a survey?

We would like the City of Newcastle to have an idea of the community's perception about progress against the Plan. The results of the survey may play a role in budget allocation and future funding decisions.

Thank you

If you do take the time to complete the survey - thank you very much!
