Who misses the Newy Night Rides?

We're looking to bring them back, and what better time than the holiday season!

NCM proposes Friday, 20th December, at 6:30pm for a Christmas Lights and Carols ride. Adorn your bike with lights and decorations, join us through Newcastle's cycleways and quiet streets, to admire the dazzling homes and sing carols along the way.

If you're interested and available on this date, please 'Like' this message. NCM is also considering a similar event in the Lake Macquarie area a few days prior.

Great Saturday morning to ride the Bathers Way.
It may look like I am riding quickly, but this is sped up 10 times normal; I overtook pedestrians slowly and did not have a single complaint or startle anyone.

The 2024 Klunker Cruise was held today taking in part of the Fernleigh Track and the Glenrock mountain bike trails. Ideally riders had to be on a pre -2000 mountain bike but the day is just about having a laugh and a crack so there were some more modern steeds in the mix.

Great day for it and a good use of the Glenrock trails without going past the limits of some of the older bikes.

The 2024 Klunker Cruise was held today taking in part of the Fernleigh Track and the Glenrock mountain bike trails. Ideally riders had to be on a pre -2000 mountain bike but the day is just about having a laugh and a crack so there were some more modern steeds in the mix.

Great day for it and a good use of the Glenrock trails without going past the limits of some of the older bikes.

Some cyclists in Newcastle are fortunate to be able to use the shared path from Honeysuckle Foreshore to Islington Park via Throsby Creek. No stress, no noise of car traffic, just the sun setting in the distance as you make your way home...

Riding the regional cycling route R5 from Speers Point Park towards the city, as far as Hamilton East. The remainder of the R5 goes along Parry St and then King St as a shared lane on a busy road - we can't recommend that part of the route as it is only for confident, experienced and fast riders. Hopefully there will be a better option via Selma St and onto Hunter St when the Stage 2 separated cycleway is constructed. The route shown here is approximately 90% shared paths and the on road sections are reasonably low traffic.

We hope you can join us at the Lake Macquarie Living Smart Festival on Saturday 21, 2024.

Why not travel there the smart way and use your bike (and optionally the train) to get there? You'll have no parking issues, it will cost virtually nothing, and your carbon dioxide production will be drastically less than if you drove there (even if in an EV).

Here we caught the train to Cockle Creek Station and then rode on the protected cycleway all the way to Speers Point Park. There are only three road crossings - one is the quiet road to the train station car park, one is at a dead-end exit of a roundabout and the final one is on a quiet street near the Park.
We will provide a cycling route for this short trip in a post prior to the Festival.

There are some challenges getting to/from the northern platform at Cockle Creek Station - you'll have to use the stairs from the cycleway/path to the platform. There are plans to add elevator access to this platform, but work has not yet commenced. If your bike is on the heavier side it will be a bit of a strain. The photos included with this post show the stairs that you'll have to navigate. Access from the southern platform (trains coming from Newcastle) to the cycleway is essentially fine - one step from the footpath to the road as there isn't a ramp - we'll add that to our Small Projects Suggestions for the Lake Mac area.

Does your commute follow the R5 along Donald St in Hamilton? If so, do you use the separated shared path or just stick to the road?

I use the shared path - I prefer to be separated from the two lanes of vehicle traffic on the busy road, but unfortunately it is far from perfect. My grievances, in order, are:
1. the often long wait at the traffic signals at the intersection of Beaumont and Donald St; pedestrians and cyclists have 8 seconds to cross on green while vehicles travelling east <-> west have at least 2 minutes, maybe more
2. the lack of priority for pedestrians and cyclists on the shared path as it crosses the extremely low volume side streets of Eva St, Bennett St, and Swan St (although it does have more traffic due to the ALDI store)
3. the sometimes long wait at the traffic signals at the intersection of Selma and the start of Parry St
4. the need to be extremely cautious on the stretch between Hudson St and Swan St due to the number of driveways
5. due to the pedestrian volume using the path, it could be widened in sections

This significantly enhances the already great end-of-trip facilities: bike rack inside the secure carpark and modern shower with free toiletries. Does your workplace provide end-of-trip facilities and if so, how good are they?
