Bike Buses for Newcastle's schools
Helping more kids ride to school - safely, socially, and with a smile.
Newcastle Cycleways Movement is excited to introduce Bike Buses to our local community, beginning with a pilot program at Adamstown Public School - with the goal of expanding to more schools across Newcastle in the future.
What is a Bike Bus?
A Bike Bus is exactly what it sounds like: a group of children and parents riding together to school along a planned route, picking up more riders along the way - just like a school bus, but on bikes.
Why are we promoting Bike Buses?
At Newcastle Cycleways Movement, we believe every child should have the opportunity to ride to school safely and confidently.
Bike Buses help make that possible by:
🚲 Getting kids active
Starting the day with a bike ride helps children build healthy habits, improve concentration, and arrive at school energised and ready to learn.
😊 Starting the day with a smile
Riding with friends is fun. Bike Buses help children build independence, confidence and connection with their local community.
💰 Helping families with cost of living pressures
Replacing even a few car trips each week with bike rides can save families money on fuel, parking and vehicle wear-and-tear.
🌏 Reducing traffic and improving safety around schools
Fewer cars at the school gate means less congestion, cleaner air, and a safer environment for everyone.
🏘️ Building stronger neighbourhoods
Bike Buses bring families together and help normalise bike riding as part of everyday life in Newcastle.
Starting with Adamstown Public School
We’re proud to launch our first Bike Bus with the Adamstown Public School community. This pilot will help us learn what works locally and build momentum for more Bike Buses at schools across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
Our vision is simple: more kids riding more often - to school, to the park, and around their neighbourhoods.
Want a Bike Bus at your school?
We’d love to hear from parents, schools and community groups interested in bringing a Bike Bus to their area.
